Acoustic pianos
By the time that Wurlitzer started manufacturing electronic organs, the company’s acoustic piano production was well-established. The experience, tooling, and production processes that Wurlitzer had invested into acoustic pianos was often adapted for manufacturing electronic organs and electronic pianos. Wurlitzer’s woodwork capabilities are what made its electronic pianos so highly playable, and the influence of acoustic piano cabinetry can be seen across Wurlitzer’s lineup of electronic organs.
Acoustic pianos were generally manufactured in Wurlitzer’s DeKalb factory. From the engineering drawings in the archive, it appears that certain aesthetic details, such as decals, must have been shared across Wurlitzer’s product lines. It also seems that some cabinetry features, such as the design of bench legs, were used in both acoustic pianos and electronic organs. Among the oversized pages, there is a substantial collection of bench leg drawings, drawn on DeKalb layout templates.
