Lubricants
Lubricants reduce and control the amount of friction between moving parts. In some cases, a lubricant facilitates assembly; in others, lubricants are applied or reapplied to maintain optimal operating conditions.
Keyboards and organs have many moving parts. In a piano (either electronic or acoustic), pressing a key triggers a series of wooden parts until, ultimately, a felt-tipped hammer strikes a piano string or metal reed. In an organ, pressing a key typically triggers an electronic contact. In both cases, the user expects smooth motion. Or, ideally, the motion is so natural that the user doesn’t notice it at all. Certain types of lubricants can facilitate this motion and rejuvenate aged parts. Many organs also contain motors, blowers and solenoids whose function is premised on regular, automatic motion and may require different lubricant formulas.
