Test and set-up procedures

Some of the drawings in the collection depict test procedures and other processes for various instruments. We’ve included those drawings on their respective pages, but we thought it would be helpful to also collect them here as PDFs. Click the links below to download.

Downloadable test and setup procedures:

Advisory Tumbling Specifications

This is a 1963 note (part number 503776) that states the tumbling mixture and procedure for “reeds.” We would need a Bill of Materials or another document to cross-reference which reeds the specifications refer to—whether it is reeds for one of the later reed organs, or an electronic piano.

Rotor Assembly Specifications

This is a document (part number 105702) that describes test procedures, environmental specifications, and mechanical noise standards for a rotor assembly (part number 150701) that is described as an Electro-Music Model U-13 Tremolo System.

Setting Up Instructions for the Wurlitzer Spinet Organ

This document (part number 503683) describes how to set up a new Wurlitzer 4040, 4040W, 4050, or 4050W organ. In particular, it explains how to remove certain pieces of packing cardboard, how to move the organ, and what to do if the organ arrives damaged.

Technical notes

Wurlitzer periodically released technical notes that described new troubleshooting procedures and other important information for technicians in the field. There are several formats: Technical Corner, which was a newsletter for techs, and Notes (Organ Notes, Electronic Piano notes, etc.), which were updates intended to be slipped into your service manual.

So far, we’ve only scanned Technical Corner newsletters. Notes will be scanned later (but feel free to request them if you’d like us to prioritize.) Click the links to download a PDF.

Wurlitzer Technical Corner

Wurlitzer Technical Corner (July 20, 1973)

This issue contains a correction to an error in Organ Note #67, an updated resistor type for Wurlitzer 200 electronic pianos that will make them less noisy, and a plea for everyone to stop sending parts to the DeKalb factory (“We are drowning in parts in DeKalb”), and more.

Wurlitzer Technical Corner (Sept. 11, 1978)

This issue has troubleshooting notes for the Wurlitzer 950, 575, 580, and 450, among other things. It also has instructions on how to replace broken key contacts for the Wurlitzer 4100. (It begins, “First of all, go to your local hardware store or hobby shop and pick up a #70 drill.”)

Wurlitzer Technical Corner (Feb. 12, 1979)

Unfortunately, we found all of the Wurlitzer Technical Corner newsletters scattered around the floor of the warehouse, so this one is missing the “attached cross-reference update sheet” (but maybe it will turn up in one of our boxes). Includes information about various organ models, including a tip on how to bring a 950, 950A or 950TA back to life if all keyers are dead, or if “the rhythm is making random sounds.”

Wurlitzer Technical Corner Vol. 8, No. 3 (Nov. 12, 1979)

This issue is four pages long and includes a lot of notes on Funmaker and Centura organs. There’s also a useful-sounding troubleshooting note on what to do if your organ is out of tune by a half step and lacking vibrato.

Wurlitzer Technical Corner Vol. 8, No. 5 (July 18, 1980)

Now it’s the 1980s and apparently time to get serious, so Wurlitzer has dropped the chatty tone and whimsical doodles of atoms and transistors. In addition to notes on Centura and Funmaker models, there are updates on D-series organs, including instructions on how to tune the D-40 (“Probably the most practical way to arrive at the correct pitch is to use the Tuba in conjunction with the pedals.”)

Service manuals

There are many service manuals in the document collection, for organs and other Wurlitzer products.

Service manuals are a little more difficult to scan, because they have a lot of pages of various sizes. However, if there is interest in a particular service manual, we can prioritize it. Let us know on the request page.

As we scan service manuals, we’ll put them here. Click the link to download a PDF. Also, don’t forget about the Wurlitzer electronic piano service manuals that we scanned for tropicalfishvintage.com!

Service manuals that we’ve scanned so far:

Wurlitzer Solid State Stereo MC-1 MS-1 Series 100 credenza

This is a really cool vintage stereo—look up some photos to check it out! The MC-1 is the record player portion. It has a radio tuner, and the top rolls up like a garage door to expose the turntable underneath. The MS-1 refers to the speakers. The service manual has schematics, a dial stringing diagram, and AM and FM alignment procedures. It also includes a layout diagram of the MC-1 that labels all of the internal parts—helpful for repair, even if the birds-eye drawing doesn’t fully depict how cool this stereo’s external design is.
